Taking cues from the park’s existing architectural interventions, the proposal reinforces critical passages, emphasizes the many vantage points and increases the opportunities for park enjoyment. The 1 Hotel & Residences converts a significant portion of the ground floor to public open space connecting through to Furman Street. The proposed buildings are inspired by the geometries and textures of nature, two long narrow green-roofed ‘volumes’ that connect to the Park and open up to views of the East River and Manhattan. Taking advantage of the sites excellent “resources” in terms of sun, precipitation, reliable wind directions, and a large adjacent heat sink. The projects sustainable systems include an East River source heat exchange system, extensive external shading, and a high performance building envelope.
